The South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to the fatal crash on US-76 at Sandy Springs Road about 9 p.m.
Coroner Josh Shore said Kenneth Stanton of Pendleton, 52, was transported to the hospital for injuries suffered in the wreck.
Shore said Stanton suffered head trauma and succumbed to injuries in the hospital shortly thereafter.
Kenneth Stanton was 52 years old, a Marine, and volunteer firefighter. He was directing traffic and was struck in a hit-and-run event. The driver was later captured. Stanton died while being transported.
