Kansas City Fire Captain Story of Survival

This morning I shared some pictures on the Facebook page of gear from a Captain in Kansas City that was badly burned while searching for a victim.  The post received a lot of attention so I wanted to dig and find some background info.

January 2015, Kansas City Fire Captain Charley Cashen was in a basement fire, where searching for a known victim.  Conditions rapidly changed for the worse, trapping Capt. Cashen.

Capt. Cashen remained calm, activated a mayday, and eventually found his way out.  He was severely burned and is recovering from his burns.

What is most impressive about this story?  Captain Cashen is a 30 year veteran of KCFD, 30 years.  Let that sink in for a moment.
