January 23, 2005 FDNY Black Sunday

It was 10 years ago today that 6 firefighters from FDNY had to make a choice no firefighter should have to make.  Stay where they were and die, or jump and hope for the best.  On January 23, 2005 2 members of FDNY were killed when they had to make this decision.  Four others survived, but had devastating injuries.

One of the survivors was Lt. Joseph DiBernardo.  Lt. DiBernardo helped lower FF Jeff Cool, and then lowered himself with rescue rope.  Lt. DiBernardo was found dead in his home in 2011.  He was 40 years old.

This video interview with survivor Jeff Cool explains what happened that day and has radio traffic.  The radio traffic is tough to listen to.  Godspeed Brothers.  Lt. Curtis W. Meyran and FF. John G. Bellew

Later that same day, Richard Sclafani was killed at a different fire.  FDNY lost 3 firefighters in one day from 2 different fires.
